Ellen Horing focuses her philanthropic endeavors around women and children. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Harlem Village Academies (HVA) where she began a financial literacy mentoring program to give middle school and high school girls the basic understandings of financial independence. She began a yearlong essay writing program for high school juniors at HVA that aids students in preparing their applications for college. After attending Harvard University as an Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow, she and her Rwandan partner started a non-profit, Happy Hearts, which provides early childhood education and teacher training in partnership with local governments in Rwanda. Presently, Happy Hearts has ten pre-schools in the urban and rural areas throughout Rwanda and they continue to expand their offerings. Ms. Horing is a member of the Women’s Leadership Board at the Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP), a research center of Harvard Kennedy School that specializes in gender research, teaching, training, and outreach.
